Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
